Protect Trees From Cicada Bugs
After 17 years underground, large noisy insects called the Brood V Periodical Cicada bugs will appear in massive amounts in the spring of 2016 throughout parts of Ohio.
Some people call these bugs the locust bug, but they are not a true locust. Real locusts look like a grasshopper.
Periodical bugs are a species of any bug that appears all together after a long period of time, and spring.
Cicadas do not eat solid foods. Instead, they use their slender straw-like mouth parts to drink tree fluids.
In areas where a limited number of cicada bugs are present, they only cause a nuisance. However, when they appear all at once by the millions, they can do serious damage to a variety of young trees and shrubs in your yard.
How do you protect your trees from Cicada bugs?
Place nets over young trees and weak trees to protect them. If you find that your trees are being attacked by Cicada bugs, you can try hosing them off with water, placing insect barrier tape around the trunk of the trees, or picking them off like grapes.
What parts of Ohio will see Cicadas bugs?
The emergence will mostly take place in Southeastern Ohio and in Summit, Medina, and southern Cuyahoga counties.
When will we see Cicadas bugs in Ohio?
Once the soil 8 inches below the ground reaches 64 degrees fahrenheit, the Cicada bugs will begin to dig tunnels to the surface and emerge, first in sunny areas of the yard, and then in others.
If your trees are sick or dying and you live in the Akron, Mogadore, or surrounding Northeast Ohio areas, contact the tree experts at GP Tree Service for more information.
